We often take better care of those around us than we do ourselves. We tell ourselves we don't have time or that other things take priority. Contrary to our thoughts, taking some time for ourselves is essential if we want to be health and well, AND it doesn't have to take much time. Here are a few things you can do for yourself in under 5 minutes!
Read
Reading can be a great way to clear your mind. It allows your brain to relax and your thoughts to flow more freely. You do not have to finish the book or even a chapter; just enjoy reading for 5 minutes. Chances are you will find more than 5 minutes if you are really enjoying the book. Now, paper book vs. e-book…studies show better comprehension and retention with paper books, but you cannot beat the convenience of an e-book. Bottom-line, it is a personal preference.
Wash your face with cool water
This can be a quick and easy way to refresh your mind and your body. Using cool water and fragrant cleanser, take a moment to enjoy the sensation of gently rubbing your face and the smell of the cleanser. Not only will you feel physically refreshed, your mind will also feel reinvigorated as well. (Brushing your teeth can also have a similar rejuvenating effect.)
Rearrange your desk or workspace
A study completed at Princeton University showed that our environment can positively or negatively influence our mental well-being. A cluttered environment can increase stress and feelings of anxiety or being overwhelmed. De-cluttering and reorganizing our space can sharpen our focus and boost our creativity. Taking 5 minutes to reorganize and de-clutter your work area provides an immediate sense of satisfaction, relief, and control. Who knows, you might find some treasure you forgot about.
Massage your cuticles and hands with lotion
Our hands take a beating all day. Taking a few minutes to pamper them has both physical and mental benefits. Massaging our cuticles and hands with lotion is soothing and helps us to feel calm. Using an aromatic lotion, depending on the scent, can be both calming as well as invigorating.
Brain Dump
We are always on the go it seems, and we store up a lot in our brains. Writing down your thoughts and feelings is a great way to sort through them and gives your mind permission to let them go now that they are documented. ‘Dumping’ our brains can provide space to relax.
