Benson Hospital is hosting a mountain bike race encouraging the community to pedal for a purpose - raising funds for the Benson Hospital Rehabilitation Department.

This is the second year of the Benson Mountain Bike Race, which takes place on March 7 at the San Pedro Golf Course. Last year, the race had 30 participants and raised $10,000 to support the purchase of pediatric equipment for the Rehabilitation Department. This year’s goal is to double participation to 60 racers and to raise $10-12,000.

“It feels great to help make the community a little healthier and in a fun way,” said Daniel Basham, Rehabilitation Director at Benson Hospital. “I also hope the event lets people know that just being outside enjoying the outdoors is a good way to get healthy.”

This year’s race will be similar in vibe to last year’s, but the course will be a little bit different with options for youth under age 17, teams and various options for adults.

Hosting a bike race was Basham’s idea so he could raise money for his department to better serve patients.

“It is nice to be able to buy more equipment for all of our patients to use from the kids to adults and being able to reach everyone in our community and the surrounding areas,” Basham said.
