For parents who lose a baby at birth, saying goodbye is an unimaginable task. A device called the Caring Cradle is now available at Tucson Medical Center to help grieving families.
“The Caring Cradle makes it possible for families to spend a little more time with their baby after a loss, allowing for memory-making and a gentle goodbye without feeling rushed,” said Heather Donahue, clinical nurse leader at TMC.
The cooling device preserves a stillborn baby’s body in a bassinet, allowing the infant to remain in the hospital room with the family so they can say goodbye and create memories in a dignified way. The cradle donated to TMC accommodates the tiniest babies - those weighing under 4 pounds.
The Caring Cradle was donated by We Miscarried Organization, a Tucson nonprofit that provides resources and support to women and families who have experienced loss.
“When you become pregnant, you plan your child’s entire life,” said Amber Sainz, founder of WMO. “When they are ripped away from you, getting back even 20 minutes - when you are missing a lifetime - makes a huge difference."
Sainz created the organization after experiencing a miscarriage in 2016. She wants other moms who have experienced loss to know they are not alone.
“The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone. It may feel like you’re the only one going through this, but you can lean on others who have gone through the same. Knowing that there is support and someone to talk to makes all the difference."
