Hospitalists, Pediatricians and Intensivists

When your child needs to stay in the hospital, you may meet several doctors who work together to provide care. At TMC for Children, three key types of physicians support inpatient care: pediatricians, hospitalists and intensivists. Each plays a unique role in your child’s health and recovery.
Pediatricians: Your Child’s Primary Partner in Care
Your child’s pediatrician is the doctor you likely know best. They provide routine care, track growth and development, and manage ongoing health needs. If your child is admitted to the hospital, the pediatrician often helps guide the overall plan and may stay involved by communicating with the hospital team. After discharge, they continue care and follow-up at home.
Pediatric Hospitalists: Experts in Inpatient Care
Pediatric hospitalists are doctors who focus on caring for children while they are in the hospital. They manage day-to-day treatment, monitor progress and coordinate tests, medications and specialty consults. Because they work in the hospital full time, hospitalists are readily available to respond quickly to changes and keep families informed. They also collaborate closely with your child’s pediatrician to ensure a smooth transition home.
Pediatric Intensivists: Care for Critically Ill Children
If a child needs a higher level of care, they may be admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Pediatric intensivists are specially trained to treat serious or life-threatening conditions. They use advanced monitoring and therapies and lead a team of nurses and specialists focused on stabilizing and supporting your child during critical illness.
Working Together for Your Child
While each physician has a different focus, they work as one team with a shared goal: providing safe, compassionate care for your child. Families are an important part of that team. If you have questions or concerns at any time, your care team is here to listen and support you every step of the way.
