Struggle Well participants at TMC pose for a photo
TMC Health is proud to be the first healthcare system in the nation to offer Struggle Well training to its employees. Developed by Boulder Crest Foundation, TMC's Struggle Well classes are an interactive, small group experience that enables participants to transform their struggles into strength through practices rooted in the science of posttraumatic growth. Struggle Well has traditionally served veterans, active-duty military personnel and first responders, with the Tucson Police Department adopting the program in 2021. Understanding the various personal and professional challenges faced by healthcare workers, TMC Health decided to extend the program to its employees, including non-clinical staff, offering them the same opportunities for healing, growth and renewed strength.
“The Struggle Well course has transformed my approach to challenges and adversity. It has shown me how my struggles can ultimately lead to personal growth and shaped me into the clinician I am today,” said Heather Jankowski, administrative director of outpatient services at Tucson Medical Center.
The impact of the Struggle Well program can be felt across the hospital, with many staff feeling a renewed purpose in caring for patients.
“I left feeling a new sense of purpose and direction, said Laura Martone Munroe, chaplain at Tucson Medical Center. “Struggle Well gave me an opportunity to be brave and to take in the bravery of others as we began to name the gifts and strengths we developed from the most difficult trials of our lives.”
Since the initiative's launch in June, Tucson Medical Center has hosted one session per month and plans to continue the program through 2026.
