Inpatient Pediatric Care

Our nurses in Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Emergency Department have years of experience caring for children. These nurses have a thorough background knowledge of the growth and development of children, and they are skilled at communication with both patients and their families.

Most of the registered nurses at TMC for Children have specialized pediatric certification, meaning they have successfully completed special training for working with infants, children and teens and have passed a Certified Pediatric Nurse Exam developed and administered by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board.

If your child needs to be hospitalized, they will be followed closely by a member of our hospitalist team. Our hospitalists function as an extension of your pediatrician during your child's stay. Your child's hospitalist is available 24 hours a day to closely monitor your child's progress and respond quickly to any changes in his or her condition.

Hospitalists at TMC for Children work with community pediatricians to facilitate the best care for patients admitted to TMC directly from the physician office or through the TMC Pediatric Emergency Department. 

While patients are hospitalized at TMC for Children, our hospitalist partners with the community pediatricians to arrange specialty consults and rounds with other interdisciplinary team members to provide comprehensive, family-centered care to patients and assure quality clinical outcomes.

Our child life specialists ensure children and families have the most positive health care experiences possible. Our child life specialists meet the social, emotional and psychological needs of our young patients.

With funding from Children’s Miracle Network, our child life specialists have the tools to help children feel as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay. Whether it’s showing a movie while the child undergoes a fluoroscopy test or facilitating a medical play session, child life specialists provide age-appropriate distractions for children. They help prepare their patients for medical procedures using anatomical dolls and other tools to reach children at their individual development level. And, with the tree library, outdoor courtyards, sensory room and playroom, children just might have a little fun while they are here.

Child life specialists work throughout the hospital, including the pediatric units, radiology, surgery and emergency departments. 

The Child Life department at TMC provides direct patient care to 45 inpatient pediatric and pediatric intensive care beds and several outpatient areas that serve pediatric patients.

Our internship offers 600 hours of clinical experience (40 hours per week for 15 weeks) during spring semesters only. We are only able to accommodate one intern per semester.
